Changes to OHSAS 18001:2007

We are at a stage where we have (almost fully) absorbed the changes made by the International Standards Organisation to ISO 9001 and to ISO 14001 or, at least, have a plan to update and to implement the changes necessary to maintain/audit compliance.

The inevitability of cut-off in 2018 means that we all must make changes, wither to our systems or, in our case, to our audit routines. We have been inundated with information and have tried to filter that in such a way as make transition as simple as possible for our clients.

Many of our clients have registrations for both 9001 and 14001 and others for 18001 too. If that is you, then you are probably wondering why OHSAS 18001 has not yet changed. 

The reason is that the ISO is working on it now. They started in 2013 and their current estimate for completion is February 2018.

It is not possible to provide an absolute statement about the the forthcoming changes, other than to say that the intention is to harmonise 18001 with 9001/14001; the same layout, terminology and risk-based thinking. The "new" standard will be...

ISO 45001 - Occupational Health and Safety,

....and will be fully introduced over a three-year period. Drop dead date for compliance and abandonment of OHSAS 18001 will therefore be February 2021.

In the meantime, current OHSAS 18001 registrations will remain valid until the publication of the new standard next year. At that time, systems can be updated and registrations transferred at any time until February 2021.
