Withdrawal of OHSAS 18001:2007

19th Sep 2019

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) published ISO 45001:2018 on 12 March 2018. This replaces OHSAS 18001:2007.

Transition will be managed in exactly the same way as the (now completed) tranistion from previous versions of ISO 9001 & 14001 to those issued in 2015.

Clients currently holding OHSAS 18001:2007 registrations will be able to continue their registrations until 12 March 2021 at which time the 2007 standard will be withdrawn and only ISO 45001:2018 recognised.

Clients wishing to continue registration can make the tranistion to the updated requirements at any time before 12 March 2021.

Transition involves three elements; management consideration of changes necessary, implementation of procedural/process changes and updating of management system documentation.

OHSAS 18001:2007 encouraged objective determination of systems to be implemented. That philosophy is very much encouraged in the new standard. Revision is largely based on the need to align 18001 with the 2015 versions of 9001 and 14001 and the changes are mostly in terminology and layout.

Appendix 4 of ISO 45001:2018 states "the organisation retains the authority, accountability and autonomy to decide how it will fulfil the requirements of this International Standard......"

That said, there are several aspects of 45001-based management systems that will be different.

It is not Quay's current intention to design and deliver a course on the transition - we currently consider the changes to be easily within the grasp of our clients.
